NEW YORK — Businesses are stealing a page from the modern dating handbook by playing host to “speed networking” events in which professionals move methodically from one business prospect to the next, getting acquainted for just a few minutes at a time. It is the corporate equivalent of speed dating, a practice invented in the late s by a rabbi hoping to fix up Jewish singles, and which has since spread. Some speed networking events use the same round-robin approach as speed dating, so the participants meet random people in an orderly way. For this more advanced type of speed networking, those attending the event fill out profiles detailing their job description, title and industry, and specifying the types of people they would like to meet. For example, attendees may hope to meet new suppliers or customers or service providers, like payroll or legal professionals. The profiles and requests are then matched up electronically, and a personalized list is generated for each participant.

I was working with my team on finishing the agenda for an intense, 2-day meeting. There was only one minute block of time left to fill. And nobody wanted to take it on. It was the 90 minutes immediately after lunch on the second day. Perfect timing for food coma and exhaustion to be setting in. Terrible timing for a facilitator. We wanted to use this 90 minutes of time to introduce a series of new initiatives we were unveiling. That was a format that would lull even the most enthusiastic participant to sleep after three or four presentations.
After 8 minutes, groups were asked to rotate to the next new initiative. This process repeated itself six times and concluded with a large group debrief. I have never seen a room full of people more abuzz and alive immediately after lunch.

Over 80 women and men attending the event shared their own experiences. Due to a combination of innovation and efficiency the speed dating format has taken hold as the preferred format for capital introduction events. The format provides investors the opportunity to review a number of strategies in one go. Additionally, these events are explicit in their intention to foster interaction. Yet, when blessed with the opportunity to participate in such a meeting, managers rarely get organized and optimize the precious interaction to the benefit of both manager and investor.

This simple application process will also help to ensure an even number of pairs during the speed dating rounds. The event will begin with general orientation to board service geared towards the potential board members. Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process which has the purpose of encouraging eligible singles to meet large numbers of new potential partners in a very short period of time. SpeedDating , as a single word, is a registered trademark of Aish HaTorah. Speed dating , as two separate words, is often used as a generic term for similar events. The earliest documented example of speed dating was by Aryeh Alan and Rena Hirsch of Los Angeles in early who developed speed dating as a solution to the problem of typical single events where “only attractive women and outgoing men have success at the end of the evening”.
